It’s launch day for the Old Cabin quilt pattern, and I couldn’t be happier to share it with you!
This quilt is all about cozy Scandinavian design, inspired by one of Norway’s favorite garments: the kofte. If you don’t know, a kofte is a knitted wool cardigan that’s both warm and beautiful – perfect for chilly cabin trips, hikes in the woods, or even long home office days!

My favorite kofte is the traditional Bøvertun pattern, named after a wayfarer’s cabin along one of the roads crossing the Norwegian mountains from East to West. The Old Cabin quilt is a tribute to this cardigan, with its repeating squares and tiny nine-patches that echo its most iconic design element.

Nine-patch love
I’ve always had a soft spot for the classic nine-patch quilt block. It was part of my very first quilt, the Farmer’s Daughter, so bringing it into this pattern felt like coming full circle. And speaking of full circle…
This morning’s cozy moment
This morning, I finished the last stitches of binding on my Old Cabin quilt while wearing my own Bøvertun cardigan. How’s that for perfect timing? It felt so right to finish this project wrapped in the inspiration behind it.

All squared up this morning - even the backing has tiny squares!
Precut friendly quilt pattern
This pattern is designed for precuts, so it’s great for fat quarter and fat eighth bundles. The cover quilt uses the bright and fun Bird is the Word collection by Ruby Star Society. A fat quarter bundle of Bird is the Word is enough for the throw size!

Don’t have precuts? No worries! You can make this quilt with yardage too. For example, using precuts for half the squares and yardage for the other half creates a stunning look, like the yellow-and-white version I’ve mocked up below.

Or how about diving into those yummy solids?

I am still waiting for the Bird is the Word fat quarter bundle to arrive (It's not supposed to arrive until January! How will I be able to wait for that long?), so meanwhile, I made a two-colour baby version. It was whipped up in only a couple of evenings, so this is a quick make!

Exchange each fat quarter in the pattern with 1/4 yard (or 20 cm) of yardage, and you're good!
