Star dots was the very first quilt pattern I wrote when I found my way back into quilting. I had a clear goal: I wanted to make a Christmas quilt using all the red fabrics already in my stash. And I wanted stars.
What I didn’t want was rows and rows of stars lined up in a strict grid. I wanted them evenly spread out, but in a softer, more playful way. The solution was surprisingly simple: I shifted each row slightly, letting the stars fall into place like polka dots in a polka dot pattern. Same shape, same size – just arranged with a little movement.
The result is Star dots: an easy Christmas quilt pattern built from simple stars, evenly distributed across the quilt, with a calm but lively rhythm.
A Nordic take on a Christmas quilt
In Scandinavian and Norwegian Christmas traditions, red and white is the classic color combination. It’s simple, bold, and instantly recognizable as Christmas – whether it’s in knitwear, table linens, or quilts.
And stars? They’re all over our Christmas decor: Knitted stars of all kinds, folded paper stars, and these stars made of long strands of birch bark, used as Christmas tree ornaments.
Star dots leans right into that tradition. The stars are made in white and cream tones, set against a scrappy red background. Using a wide variety of red fabrics adds depth and richness, even though the color palette is limited. The quilt feels traditional and festive, but not stiff or formal.

Scrappy red background, simple stars
The background in Star dots is intentionally scrappy and made up of many different reds. Each block uses 2 1⁄2” squares, making it perfect for leftovers from other projects – or for finally cutting into that Christmas jelly roll you’ve been saving.
I recommend sticking to reds of medium to dark value for the background so it reads as one cohesive surface, while keeping the stars clearly lighter. White and cream fabrics work beautifully here and give the stars a calm, classic look.
Fabric choices make all the difference
One of my favorite things about Star dots is how different it can look depending on fabric choices.
- Go scrappy, and the quilt feels cozy with a vintage vibe
- Stick to a tight color palette, and it becomes calm and graphic
- High contrast makes the stars pop
- Low contrast creates a softer, more blended look

Beginner-friendly and relaxing to sew
Star dots is a very beginner-friendly Christmas quilt pattern. The stars are made using snowballed corners (stitch n’ flip), with a small overlap – which means it’s actually impossible to lose your star points. A small detail, but one that makes the sewing experience much more relaxed.
The only real challenge is the number of blocks. There are quite a few! But this is the kind of project that’s perfect for chain piecing. Put on a good podcast, settle in, and let the blocks grow steadily. Or just start with the table runner size if you want a quick finish!
