Do you know that feeling of wrapping up in a cozy old sweater? That’s where the idea for Stormy Stitches came from. It’s my third quilt pattern in a series inspired by the practical, no-nonsense knitwear that’s been keeping Norwegians warm for ages. Think: rugged fishermen, wool sweaters, and those classic nautical vibes — now turned into a quilt!
Stormy Stitches is all about clean, simple lines. It’s easy to sew and has just the right touch of Nordic charm. If you’re into Scandi style, this one’s for you.
The pattern is perhaps the simplest pattern you can knit with two colors: A single stitch in a contrasting color that makes in stand out from the background. In Norwegian, these stitches are called lus, or lice (!). Hence the name Lusekofte. The two-color pattern was not only decorative – it also made the sweaters and cardigans warmer.

Me rocking knitwear in the early eighties.
What you’ll need for stormy stitches
This is a fat quarter friendly quilt pattern, so it’s perfect if you’ve got a pile of those waiting to be used. Or, you can go for yardage if that’s your thing. Here’s what you’ll need:
-
Fat quarters: Use fat quarters for the "stitches". You need 7 for a throw size (you’ll find the amounts for baby and king sizes in the pattern).
-
Background fabric: Choose one that makes the "stitches" stand out. A solid or low volume print will work well!
-
Binding fabric: I like to pick up one of the colors from the feature fabrics.
-
Batting: For that cozy, snuggly feel.
-
Backing fabric: Pick something fun or keep it simple. Totally up to you!
All the exact fabric requirements and details are in the pattern, so you’ll have everything you need to get started.

My fabric pull for the Stormy stitches: Some Ruby star society (those eggcups scream Scandi style!) and an old favorite of mine, Flea market fancy by Denyse Schmidt.

Beginner-friendly (but not boring for pros!)
If you’re new to quilting, Stormy Stitches is a great way to practice Half Square Triangles (HSTs). The pattern uses the “2 at a time” method, and it’s super easy to follow. I’ve added tips to make it as stress-free as possible.
If you’re a more experienced quilter, this one’s a fast, fun project that’s perfect for a weekend sew. It’s quick to make but still looks impressive — win-win!
