The inspiration behind the Fjord star quilt

The inspiration behind the Fjord star quilt

There’s a special kind of magic in the rugged landscapes of Western Norway. I grew up in Sunnmøre, surrounded by towering mountains, deep inlets, and ever-changing skies. Today, I’m thrilled to share how this landscape inspired my newest quilt pattern, the Fjord Star.

This is me, wrapped up in my Fjord star quilt, perusing the rugged mountains and fjords of my childhood landscape.

The Fjord Star is more than just a quilt pattern. It’s a tribute to the beauty of the place I’ve always called home, even though I live in a different part of the country now. At its heart is the Fjord Star block, a design rooted in the classic Sawtooth Star but with a twist: a stylized fjord landscape nestled within. The block captures the essence of fjords—mountains rising against the sky, their reflections shimmering in tranquil waters below. I fell so in love with the block, I even decided to make it the logo of Scandiquilts!

Here are a few more photos, because there can never be enough landscape inspo!

Although this is technically a lake, not a fjord, I passed this location this summer and had to stop to get a picture!
Ålesund, Norway
My hometown Ålesund is doing pretty good with the reflections, too!

The Quilt’s Palette

The color palette is chosen to evoke the moods of the fjord landscape. The deep blues are reminiscent of the fjords at dusk, when the water is inky and reflective.  Teal, blue, white, and purple fabrics capture the shifting tones of water, ice, and sky.  The yellow and mustard stars represent the distinct color of lichen scattered over the rocks. (Which, unlike the sun, is visible at all times!)

Construction: A Celebration of Flying Geese

The Fjord Star quilt is constructed from 49 blocks, each one built from flying geese units. I’ve fell in love with flying geese for their versatility and movement, and here they felt especially fitting. Although flying seagulls would be a more fitting name, perhaps!

The cover version of the quilt is scrappy, but it would look great in solids as well, or with a light background.

Designed for you

Creating this pattern was as much about sharing my love of the fjords as it was about offering you, fellow quilters, a chance to make something meaningful. I designed the Fjord Star to be beginner-friendly, yet rich with opportunities for customization. Stick to my palette or venture into your own – in any case, the finished quilt will tell a story that’s uniquely yours.

Whether you’ve visited the Norwegian fjords, the block reminds you of your own happy place, or you simply dream of faraway landscapes, the Fjord Star quilt invites you to wrap yourself in wilderness, one stitch at a time.
